We’ll all experience a roof leak at some time in our life, but sometimes spotting one isn’t as easy as you’d think. Suspect you might have one? Here are the top four clues you have a roof or exterior leak:
- Water Staining
Water staining can usually appear as a brown edged looking puddle on your ceiling. Size doesn’t matter, either. Big or small, this is a telltale sign of a leak. These leaks aren’t always simple to determine their origin. It could be an obvious shingle missing or an indirect, but persistent water trail from another entry point. It’s a good idea to get it checked out as soon as you see it. These will worsen over time and can cause soft ceiling and failing drywall to mold and mildew problems.
Got a drip? These don’t normally occur except during heavy rain, heavy wind with rain fall and/or heavy roof snow melt, but are always a sure sign of a breach in your roof. There are times, depending on location, when it could also be a leaky pipe. Either way, get it checked out!
- Wall Staining
Staining is not isolated to ceilings only. Water staining can also be seen on interior walls. Could be a leak from your roof that has traveled down or it could also be at an entry point on your siding, stucco, brick or stone etc. Water is getting through, though and needs to be addressed.
Finding a missing shingle/s or excessive shingle debris in your gutters, can also be a sure sign of a current leak or an imminent leak.
